The foundation of the mattress is its open coil spring system.

It is made up of rows of hourglass shaped open coil springs, also known as Bonnell springs.

Each spring is connected at the top and bottom by a spiral wire, known as the helical wire which runs from the head to the foot of the mattress.

The perimeter of the spring unit is strengthened by a thick rod-edge wire that supports the edge of the spring system, preventing border breakdown.
